Stranded w/ Fuel Pump problems on 740 GL 4C 700 1990

Hi my friend told me about this site I hope someone can help. My roommate has a 1990 740 GL 4C w/fuel problems. At first it would turn over but not fire, checked spark plugs their fine, then changed fuel filter(still had original installed) but not sure if we used all 4 copper washers but it doesn't leak on either side now(but will that be a problem in the future?) It still wouldn't start so I got in the trunk and took out that pump under the plate( It was a PITA) and found that a small rubber hose on one line had come loose, I reattached it, looked at the screen and it didn't seam to be clogged w/ anything. I did my best to remember where the big hose, small hose and 2 fuel lines where positioned and used some vasaline on the seal and reinstalled the pump(also a PITA) and it started. But not so fast now it has power up 2 about 2500RPM's then it dies. I had to pull over turn it off 4 a couple minutes and repeat that process for 15 miles. What do I need to fix next?
