Distributer Question....

You need more info from your friend.

If it's truly a B20 in the car, it's a 75, and that's a one-year-only engine in a 240. In 1976 they introduced the B21 to North America.

If it's a B20, you need a dist from a 69-up B20E or B20F fuel-injected engine. This should be in any 1800, or 142/144/145E model.

If it's the much more common B21 engine, it'll have Bosch K-Jet fuel injection and you'll need the dist from a 76-81 car. This is what I think you'll find out that you need.

If there's a question, the fender tags should tell you what it is, but really you should get the info off the labels under the hood- assuming they're still readable.

In mid-1982 Volvo introduced a new type of fuel injection, Bosch LH-Jetronic. This was fitted to some 82's but not all. I think the split is January 1, 1982, but do not quote me on that. The engine was still a 2.1 liter (B21). This injection is LH1.0.

In 1983, the engine changed to the 2.3 liter (B23) and the fuel injection version changed, to LH 2.0.

In 1985, the displacement didn't change, but bearings, pistons, and some other details did, and the engine is now known as the B230. The injection version changed to LH 2.2.

Note that all 240 Turbos made from 1981 to 1985 have the B21FT, turbocharged 2.1 liter engine, and retained K-Jet injection. If you need the 76-81 dist, the Turbo one may work for you- check the connector on any that you find.

In 1989, the B230 gained a crank sensor, lost the hall-sensor pickup in the distributor, and the fuel injection became LH 2.4.

In 1991 or so, manual-transmission cars received a further change to LH3.1. My 1992 240 has this. Automatics mostly remained LH2.4, though I have heard of LH3.1 models, never confirmed this in person.

Good luck navigating this. Verify exactly what your friend needs before you go hunting.
