Testing Air Conditioning

I'm looking for a 740 to replace my ageing 240 and my main concern is working air conditioning (useful in Australia). If a car's A/C is not cold, used car salespeople are fond of telling you the A/C just needs regassing but is there a way of telling if an A/C will respond positively to this? For instance, can you tell if the compressor is knackered somehow? What signs are worth looking for? I had my 240 regassed once, turned it on and a cloud of gas came out the vents that nearly asphyxiated me.
Thanks
