Overdrive actuating piston replacement? 200 1985

I own a 1985 Volvo DL, 230K miles, manual M46 tranny, overdrive not engaging. I have done all the checks to ensure that the overdrive relay and solenoid are working as well as made sure 12V are at the solenoid on my M46 transmission.

From reading some previous postings I found that the next step in getting the tranny to shift into OD is replacing the actuating piston o-rings. I have a couple questions:

1. Is this the next logical step????? Anything I missed??

2. If so, do the pistons themselves need replacement, or will changing just the o-rings suffice?

3. Does anyone recommend synthetic fluid replacement for the M46 transmission?

4. If so, what is the best way to flush out the system of all the Type F fluid besides just draining it all?

Thanks for the help!!
