New bearings for my 240 rear end 200 1982

I'm getting some pretty serious noise from my 1982 245 rear end while under way. Pretty sure it's the differential, most likely the pinion bearings. There aren't a lot of low-mileage, boneyard rear ends with the ratio I need (3.53:1), so I am looking into the possibility of replacing the bearings myself. Anybody tried this? Any success doing the repair with the rear end still in the car? I know another solution would be to settle for a later model boneyard rear end with a different ratio, but I would like to avoid altering the power/fuel economy balance if I can. Thanks in advance for all your help!
