tranny mode switch 900

On my recently purchased '97 960 that you all have heard so much about lately, I've noticed that the transmission mode selector may be reversed. I get the holding high RPM's, sensitive kickdown in E and the quick upshifts and less sensitive kickdown in S. What's up with that? Am I imagining this or have some weird acceleration habits? The transmission seems to be fine other than being a little slow to engage into Drive after backing up from the driveway or a parking space and then shifting through Neutral and into Drive. I've read a lot about flushing the fluid and will have to check if it has been done before. The beast has 141K on the clock.

Aren't Volvos fun?!
