Hello,
We recently bought a 1990 760T Wagon for my wife. I love that engine. It's powerful, and it's just squeaky clean, looks like it's coming out of the factory, with not an extra rattle or noise it shouldn't be making (it's another story for the exhaust).
Anyway, there's a weird electrical issue that I have a hunch about but would like to submit for advice.
Sometimes, after starting the car, the overdrive arrow is on (it's an auto), and no amount of pushing on the button will get it off. At the same time, the power windows and power roof, as well as turn signals, are not working. All those things are running off the same fuse #14 as the overdrive.
I tried to replace the fuse of course.
Now the wird part is that if I turn the key to turn the electricity on without starting the car, there is no problem with the windows and the rest, but turning the key more and actually starting turns the overdrive arrow on and the rest stops working. The times where the overdrive behaves fine, the rest works as well. It does not come back to normal unless the car is stopped and started again, but not every time.
What could this be? Maybe a problem with the overdrive relay, a short that happens only when the car is started and the overdrive comes into play, blocking that whole fuse circuit? Overdrive relay gone bad?
I remember a similar problem on a 240 wagon we used to have that involved either the relay or the switch, but do not remember any other equipment being off at the same time (although the fuse configuration was of course different).
Any idea before I start tearing up everything?
Thanks!
David.
