Fuel pump noise 900

My wife has a 93' 940 Turbo w/160K miles. I drove it yesterday and noticed a high pitched sound which I assume to be the fuel pump. According to my wife this has been going on for a couple of weeks. The idle is a little rough, and the fuel level was below 1/4 tank. Drivability seems to be fine. I eplaced the fuel filter about six months ago so it should be fine. Reading some of the prior posts it could possibly be the in tank pre-pump or perhaps the FPR. What is the quickest simplest way to verify the operation of both?
