I just purchased a 1992 240 wagon in excellent condition. I drove it from California to Texas with absolutely no issues, but about 50 miles from home while doing about 80 mph I suddenly heard a loud flapping sound (non-metallic). I pulled over immediately. There was transmission fluid dripping on the ground-- I lost maybe a 1/2 cup or a few ounces, then the dripping absolutely stopped. I drove another few miles and checked again and found no leakage at all. Meanwhile, the transmission never faltered. Two days later, there were no drips and perfect transmission performance. I checked the tranny fluid level multiple times as instructed by the manual (followed the manual to the letter) and the fluid is between min and max levels. The fluid was never hot. I am assuming that the vent blew off some pressure, but why did this not happen earlier in my trip? After all, I drove at 75mph throughout the trip. Is it significant that the only time I hit 80mph the tranny made this weird sound and blew off a bit of fluid? The fluid is red in color and clear. When the transmission vent blows does it make the weird flapping or pounding sound that I heard? Any experience with this problem out there? Cheers!
