Boneyard Overdrive 200 1982

So, let's say I'm looking through the boneyard for an overdrive unit for my M46 transmission. I've read that when removing the OD unit from the transmission while still on the car, it can be nearly impossible to separate them unless the car was last run in reverse upon shutting down. If I find an OD unit in a boneyard, what's the best way to separate one from the other?
Thanks in advance for all your help!
