Timing Belt Woes...Some Quick Basic Questions from a Novice 200

I line up the cam with its mark, the center of the rotor dead on the distributor mark and the notch in the properly seated crank belt guide (I think you wrote cam) with the vertical rib on the block and I never fail to get a perfectly running 12 BTDC car, Lucid's use of a protractor notwithstanding.
