Obvious Air Box Mod??? 900

I know next to nothing about internal combustion engines, BUT...
I took out the airbox of my '93 940 turbo wagon to give it a good cleaning and find out where the hell the air intake is located. I discovered that it is drawing air from the wall cavitiy of the front quarter panel.
This was a surprise.

Wouldn't it be a performance modification to cut through that quarter panel and add a tiny air scoop to the side of the car?

This seems so obvious that there must be something wrong with my brilliant idea...
