spining ball joint woes 120-130

So I have a good ball joint and while I was reassembling the nut jambed (or at least has more friction than the tappered shaft in its yoke(whole). I have tried putting pressure on the shaft so I can turn the nut on or off. As the nut is halfway I can"t hold the shaft. Usually I would jack up the car on the underside of the joint creating enough friction in the yoke, but that does not work in this case. And oh yeah I'm ashamed to say it's a 98 Honda civic so removing the ball joint from the wishbone does not work in this scenario.
So, sorry about the Honda but this site has better mechanics than most. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Patrick.
