RED? 444-544

Some places to look for the original 46 red would be inside the dash, on the interior firewall (under the carpets)and the upper rear wheel arches (inside the trunk). All of the metal parts in the interior would have also been the 46 red, but it sounds like the PO was very intent to cover over all traces of the original paint. I did something similar when I repainted my 1960 Amazon from it's original 42 (California White). I removed all door skins, headliner, interior trim and dash. Good hunting.
