Slapping sound - 760 IRS 700 1989

Maybe someone can give an idea for my 89 760T. I read the FAQ's and the only thing I have seen is to reverse the rear IRS axles & that may be the answer, just don't want to do something that would make things worse.

What it is doing is - at random - there is a slapping sound that will come from the back as I take off, seemingly from the drivers side. No, it is not the center hanger. That does make a sound too, but this is totally different.

History. Had the three bushings that hold the center chunk secure replaced at a local shop. Price was right, good mechanics, but really not Volvo techs.

About two months after that repair I noted the slapping sound that would come and go. It is a pop, pop, pop, pop ...etc. in rapid succession. Tightened the emergency brakes as I thought it was a loose cable. Came back.

I have noted that when I raise the back end up, allowing the back tires to dangle, it goes away for a good period - then will come back with the same regularity.

Any ideas? Is the swapping of the axles the next step to take?

Thanks for any direction.
