grinding noise in first gear?

Something I've been wondering about; As I start to accelerate forward in first gear, if I try to go too fast, there is a grinding noise coming from the rear of the vehicle somewhere, coupled with a reduction in speed and power. This only continues for a moments or two at very low speed, then lets up and I can accelerate normally. Any ideas on where I should start? Thanks.
