Shuddering in first gear (5 speed manual) 200 1990

I have a `90 240 wagon with 100k miles that I bought here in Germany. I was already able to "fix" a problem with the turn signals by searching posts on the board (fuse was corroded). Now I am having another problem and need your help.

I have an intermittent shudder out of first. I have read other posts that mention shuddering from acceleration, but not intermittent. Some days it drives just fine without the shudder, and some days it starts out of the blue and shakes so much out of first that it almost feels like it's about to stall.

I bought the Bentley service manual last time I was in the States, but I don't have much experience with repairs...I used to change my own oil, and I have done some minor things. Still, I don't know many women who like to change their own oil (hanging out with the wrong crowd, perhaps?). :) My goal is to be able to diagnose the problem(s) instead of immediately taking my car to the shop.

BTW, E codes are amazing, brighter high beams than I've ever seen. Better than any factory xenon, and glass lenses.

Thanks!
