Air conditioning help 200

One of my projects this spring is to see if I can get some cold air out of my 1990 244. I have own the car for two years and I had a lot of fun working on some of the problems I have had and thanks to the people on this site. I know very little about the air conditioning system. I have know idea how to trouble shoot it. I know the compressor clutch comes on when I turn it on. Do I need to do a conversion? Is there a good book that will explain how the system works? Where do I start? I thank you all for your help.

Denis
