Remote diagnosis help - rough initial idle, may die if not allowed to idle for a few mins 200 1992

Trying to help my friend who bought my former 1992 244 about 1.5 years back. It has developed a fault where,

"it will start and run like crap for about a minute and then she goes. i was told i could spend lots of money to fix it or be slightly inconvenienced once in a while when i go to start it."

I sent the description of the IAC cold start problem from the FAQ, and he said,

"not like that. it will start quick and run rough for a bit. if i wait until it smooths out on its own it runs fine. if i give it any gas right away, it dies and wont restart, sometimes for the rest of the day."

I had resoldered the fuel pump relay, cleaned the IAC, and generally had the car in good running order prior to selling it to him. He has since replaced the 561 ECU with a 951 unit. He's taken it to both the local volvo specialist and another well respected shop and ended up with the answer from the first quote above. A quick search of the archives didn't point to any obvious answers, so what do you think?
