Last week I was driving my Volvo, everything was good. The next morning I went to start it and it wouldn’t turn over. There were lights on the dash and the radio came on, but it wouldn’t turn over. That night I put the battery on a charger and also cleaned the battery terminals.
The next morning I tried to start it and the car started to crank then everything (and I mean everything, lights, radio, etc) went dead. Looking back I may not have secured the wire to the battery – it may have slipped. Anyway, I took the battery out and took it to Wal-Mart – they said that the battery was strong (710 cold cranking amps, it is rated for 640 cca). The battery is a little old (six or seven years) but is holding it’s charge. So I went back and put the battery back into the car. Turned the key… and it started right up. Great! So I turned off the car. The next morning the car wouldn’t start again. This time there was a clicking like the battery was weak. So I took the battery out again and took it to Autozone, they tested the charge as well as the battery’s capability to hold a charge. It passed again with flying colors. I went back and put the ends of the wires into a cup of water / baking soda, but there was little reaction since there was little corrosion (acid).
Any ideas? Can the wires themselves go bad? They look clean though I’ve only looked at the wires right where they connect to the battery. I’ll hook the battery back up tomorrow morning (I had it out to check / clean the wires). Could this be a starter motor that is going bad but hasn’t completely gone?
Thanks!
