Cold made the originals incapable of supporting the hatch, so I replaced them with aftermarket from http://www.fcpgroton.com last winter. This winter is the second year for them still doing OK. Nice because the gate doesn't slam closed if you let it go - just shuts more gently. If you'd rather deal with the chain outfit, just take one in with you or wait in line for the counter kid.
