240GL SRS & Overdrive Indicator lights on! 200

Something weird just happened on my newly acquired 1992 240GL with 185K miles on it. I started car and SRS warning light stayed on as well as overdrive indicator off light. Car gear shift lever wouldn't move. Finally got shift lever to move and was able to drive vehicle home. While driving I tried turning overdrive on and off and this had no affect on the OD indicator light. Stopped in my driveway and with car still running put in park- heard noise, which I can only describe as like whiring or grinding and SRS light as well as overdrive indicator light went off. Started car several times and all seems ok now.

What the heck was that?

There is a decal found on the left-hand door pillar which says that certain parts of the SRS should have been replaced in 2002.

The strange part is what does the SRS system and overdrive light have in common?
