Auxillary Fuel Tank - reconnecting hoses 700

Hello all
In the process of trying to fix my fuel gague problem I had to remove the auxillary fuel tank from my 88 740. There are two hoses connecting the auxillary to the main tank which are reasonably easy to disconnect but which I found a nightmare to reconnect, in fact I am planning a trip to my mechanic on Tuesday to get him to reconnect the larger of the two as I don't think I've got it particularly well set. In the meantime, does anyone know a way of making this reconnection easier? It's almost impossible from inside the boot of the car as the space available between the aux. tank and the main tank, as well as the short length of the hoses, makes it impossible to get your hands in there, and from underneath access is also really difficult (particularly without a hoist or pit to work in). Any help would be most welcome, and just as an aside, do the American 700s have the auxillary tank as well?
