Long Story (short story below):
Last weekend near the end of a 700 mile road trip my beloved 240 started to stutter while at highway speeds. At first it was only once every few miles, but it quickly got worse. Of course I stopped and quickly checked all vacuum lines and ground connections, but no problems were found.
Long story short it got better and got me 20 miles from home before it totally died. I nursed it to the parking lot of an Autozone and set to work trying to find the problem. I didn't have my Bentley or volt meter, so I was sort of limited. I decided to swap the fuel filter, as the problem first started 10min after stopping for gas. While swapping the FF I had the battery disconnected, so the ECU reset.
Got everything swapped and the car was running like new. Though over the course of the next 20 miles is stutered 3 times. Over the next week I drove it to work with it stuttering about once every 5-10 miles, or once a day. Today I thought life was back to normal and took off for a mountain bike trail. when things got bad.
Short Story
So here is what it does:
1991 240, manual trans, A cam, IPD exhaust, 197k.
Tach needle drops to 0 for anywhere between 1 second and forever. Eventually the car slows down and dies. it restarts rough but eventually finds idle and is fine. On the road it is alright for a few minutes, then repeat. Seems to be best at 2000+rpm
It seems to happen at no interval. Though hitting a bump causes a hiccup for sure.
What do I test first? It spits out an engine RPM sensor code, but Bentley does not mention what that means or how to fix it.
I'm a grad student so I can't afford to take it in for a diagnotic. But I have no problem pulling ou the ECU and reading all my numbers as a diagnostic myself.
Thanks,
Matt
