I hated the AW(ful)-71 as much as you. That's why I put an M47 in my 740 wagon. Mileage is in the mid 20's and while I don't think it's any faster (the M47 is a little bulky and clumsy for my taste, and God, the clutch is heavy), at least I can get it to move off the line with enough authority that I don't have to worry about being broadsided now if something's coming that I didn't see. It's also a lot more fun to drive not having the transmission hell bent for going into overdrive all the time.
