Multiple intermittent electrical failures---Ignition switch? 700

A friend recently bought a 90 745 GL. It has an intermittent electrical problem, which causes the power windows, radio, and turn signals not to work. The engine runs normally, and other electrical items work. When the problem occurs, it begins when the car is started, and remains until the car is turned off. It may or may not happen the next time it is run. My first thought is to suspect the electrical part of the ignition switch. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? If so, what was it?
