Multiple intermittent electrical failures---Ignition switch? 700

I just bought my first volvo last week, after a lot of research on durability etc-its a 1990 740 gl,and first trip after e-test and certification(this car has 200,000 kms on it) a very similar problem happened only after 2 minutes of driving with no radio or signals the car lost what felt like ignition or fuel pump feed and left us on the side of the road, after a tow and the embarassment of borrowing my inlaws buick with
360,000 km on it to finish our trip, im going to tear in tommorow--does any one else some input on this problem--ignition switch sounds sensible to me.

thanks
