Steering options - Power Assisted or Rack and Pinion?

Need to sort out my steering - got my steering box rebuilt about 2 years ago and it has a considerable amout of play in it. Also, my girlfriend refuses to drive it as the steering is pretty heavy. Some would say thats a good thing but im getting pressured to sort it out or get a new car - no prizes for guessing what i'm going to do.

So i'm looking to lighten the steering and remove the play in one go and as far as I can see I have 2 options:
1. Would love to install power steering but finding a RHD setup is pretty much impossible. Anyone have any sources?
2. Has anyone tried to install a rack and pinion from a 2 series and can it be done? Used to have a 245 and the steering on that was great.

Cheers
