Strut Removal tips and tricks, please

I'm following the directions from the 700/900 Faq and my Hayners manual, but I can't get the darn thing out of there.
The strut is free at the top, but remains connected at the bottom, so I have two quuestions:

1. I removed the pin, and unscrewed the nut at the very bottom of the strut, but it won't pop free. Any advice? Do I need to buy/rent a special tool?

2. I unscrewed the nut that connects to the steering arm, but that won't drop free either. How do I get that loose?

This is my 1993 940 wagon that I"m wrestling with, btw...
