I would only add that I think blockage of the thin pipe does have an effect on running. When it is all clear, some of the intake air for combustion is drawn in through this pipe, in a proportion that is presumably taken into account in the overall engine management. So if the pipe blocks, I would have thouight the mixture is richened.
Certainly there is a converse effect - try pulling off the pipe while the engine is running, and it will hesitate and probably stall.
