Oil Question S90-V90

Poolman:
Volvo never recommended using oil that had more than twenty points difference in the numbers. One reason, I think, is that the additives that go into a 5W-40 are not oil and there is a lot of it. So you have less oil! THe recommendation is 10W30 between -4F and +104F. For more extreme situations they recommend 10W30 synthetic. they say 15W40 should not be used under normal conditions.

If you have blow-by and the PCV system is not taking care of it, maybe that is where to look. I think that even a high-mileage engine is happy with 10W30. Certainly 5W is not ever needed in VA. And 20W50 is never recommended!

-- S' V',still wondering why my fuel mileage went up by 20% for no reason.
