Clutch cable adjustment. 200

It's an '89 with a 5 speed. Got the new clutch in and am now having a hard time adjusting the cable. It keeps slipping, slipping, slipping when I try to pull out. When I go back under again and again the cable seems tight? And the peddle seems to have between 3/8 and 9/16 in of free play.
Question: When adjusted close to right how far would the fork (which the little half ball at the end of the cable goes in) be from the ring on the bell housing which holds the stupid rubber "bolt" that just strips when you try to adjust it be.
You get the idea...I'm trying to do this in a one stop kinda way...instead of adjusting, driving, adusting, driving, adjusting, driving, adjusting.
My goal is to just drive.
Thanks.
