hello
my 240 had been running fine for about 6 months since i purchased it in oct.
last week we received some heavy rains and after i dropped some books off at the library my car didn't want to start. i gave it some gas and got it to start then it stalled. i was finally able to get it to start w/ a heavy foot on the gas.
after i did get it to start it hesitated quite a bit and didn't have much power at low speeds. the car idled really high sometimes and it seemed like it was searching for the right idle speed. but often times it seemed like it was hardly getting any gas and was about ready to die. the more i ran the car the better it seemed to work. but if i stopped the car and let it sit the whole process would start over again (hard start).
i took it to a shop close to my house the following morning on the way to work. they replaced the spark plugs and told me they were extremely dirty (the car had a tune up kit installed not too long before my purchase) and sent me on my way. this didn't remedy my problems and the car acted just as before.
i read in my haynes manual and got the error codes: 2-3-1 & 2-3-2 on plug 2, plug 6 read 1-1-1.
so i took it to a mechanic who is more familiar w/ volvos and i used in the past w/ success(timing belt/seals/water pump). after doing some reading i think i influenced him when i said i suspected the air mass. so it was no surprise, he did recommend an air mass sensor. he said he thought it was on its way out. he unplugged the air mass sensor and said he thought it ran better that way. this was on friday so i knew i would have to order the part over the weekend so i took the car home w/ the sensor unplugged.
i noticed that this made the car smell like gas and it drank it more readily than i've ever seen it. it idled really really bad... it no longer searched for idle speed or idled high... it just idled really really bad like the engine was going to quit.
again i checked the error codes w/ the sensor unplugged: 1-1-3 & 2-2-1 & 1-2-1
on saturday i could no longer start the vehicle. i was worried that i ran out of gas so i put some in the car (1 gallon) and i added some stp cleaner. still no luck.
today i got the air mass sensor and replaced it myself which is really easy even for a non-mechanic.
i cleared the error codes... and i still can't get the car to start. it turns over... but rarely makes that combustion sound like its going to start. i think i'm getting spark and i think this is a fuel problem. i never get any ignition error codes. and none have come back on plug 2 since i did the reset.
i hear the full pump relay click which was replaced in /05, and i can hear the in-tank fuel pump.
however, on saturday it did seem like a fuel pump was really loud when i was cranking it.
it would be really great if i could get the car started so i could at least get it to a reputable mechanic.
i dearly want to get it running again. i've never had a car that i loved so much.
any ideas?
