trunk handle corroded 900

The trunk handle on my 940 sedan was extremely corroded. Not sure why; nothing else on the car is quite like this. It got to the point where you'd squeeze the handle and it wouldn't spring back. Anyway, I used baking soda to dissolve away some of the crude, and also scraped some off.

Any suggestions on how to treat the mechanism to minimize future corrosion? I was thinking of using Vaseline.
