I live in the pacific north west, I'm pretty sure wet weather performance is pretty important here... That being said, the only way wider tires can possibly hurt wet performance is in hydroplaning resistance. If you have good tires with tread on them, you will have better performance with wider tires, hands down. You're not supposed to go 70+mph through puddles anyway.
