Is my A/C Compressor gone? 700

Hi Guys
My A/C stopped working by the end of last summer. I never got around to look at the problem, but now with summer approaching I have to. There is no cold air coming out of the air vents. I dont hear the compressor engaging at all.
Where should I start looking? If the compressor does not engage is it gone or could it be just the clutch or a discharged system?
In case I need to replace the compressor, the system has been retrofitted for R134A,should I get a replacement for R134A (FCP has one for $265) or should I get one for R12 (FCP for $255 but having to change oil). The reason for my question has to do with the fittings.
Not experienced with A/C at all.
Any piece of advice will be welcomed.
Tks
