INTERMITTANT ALTERNATOR 700 1987

My son's 87 740T is having charging issues. He tells me the voltmeter will show normal for a moment then nothing the next, then maybe pop back up again later, then gone again. (He's 200 miles away at college: UT Knoxville -go Vols) He's checked connexions at the alternator, battery, the dash 'idiot' lights are ok. He needs to drive home this weekend for a meeting. I will try to procure a new/rebuilt alt for him when he arrives. Question is: How long would he be able to drive if it fails? I've told him to leave ALL accessories off.
Can he drive 3 hours? or should I meet him halfway with tools and alt?
Thanx...
