Automatic transmission slipping into neutral 200 1988

Hi fellow bricksters:

I need some help with a tranny issue (for an acquaintence); so when driving, her brick will feel as if it has slipped into neutral - give gas, engine revs, no go (while shifter is still in "D"). This doesn't happened immediately after start up but after a short while of driving. She brought it to a shop and they had a new radiator put in ($650!), car drove fine for a couple of weeks and now the symptoms have returned. Shop now says new tranny needed ($1700). Fluid levels are OK. If it slips into "neutral" during driving, she turns off the car and lets it cool. Starts it back up and brick will drive fine for a short while and slip into "neutral" again. As you can imagine trips take a little while with all the stopping a cooling along the way. Is a new tranny really in order?
