Strut rattle 200 1989

Oops. I was noticing noise coming out of the right front strut tower that was getting worse as I drove. I took a look at it a few times but didnt see anything and the rattling was getting worse. I looked again today and saw that the gland nut had completely unscrewed and was dangling. I was happy to find the problem. But of course the solution is a different story. I tried to screw it back in but I couldnt line it up straight in order to catch the thread. Has this ever happened to anyone? Is there some way of getting this done without having to take it all out again. Jacking up the car doesnt help because the spring does not get compressed enough to be able to tighten down the gland nut. Any tricks would be most appreciated. Philski3
