Coolant Loss - where did it go? 200 1988

OK - New Blackstone radiator 2 years ago (hoses and water pump were not replaced). This car has never lost any coolant in the 5 years I've had her than this afternoon the temp guage (stock - no temp comp mod) goes from normal '8.30' position to '9.30'; lift the hood and expansion tank empty. Despite potential for complacency I swear I saw coolant a few weeks back when doing a quick oil check.

Drove a short distance to get coolant - temp 'guage' climbed, but no higher than '9.30', added coolant and drove short distance home with a couple of litres spare coolant in the back. Car ran as good as always - I love the way a Volvo will usually make it home.

Can't see any evidence of leak but the water pump (unknown age) has been chirupping away for a while now. OK months. I know, I know - stitch in time.

So, I'm thinking I'm up for new water pump and hoses. My question: Where's the coolant going? What are the chances I've done serious damage to the head?

Archives suggest water pump and maybe a check under the floor mats...

Appreciate any advice.

Thanks

Oh and my odo died recently at 269,000 kms - just in case anyone is compiling average odo morbidity rates!
