240-90 ac compressor leaking oil. How long do I have before it gets ugly. I can see...

I can see Oil sprizted on the intake hose, and if I wipe it, its right back i short order. Not enough to pool though.
How long before the compressor can be damaged. I just noticed this a couple days ago. System was charged about a week ago.
Its getting hot here in sacramento, and I need to order a compressor, have the system evacuated, install the compressor and have it recharged.
should I shut it down? Or would it be safe to run for awhile?
