Inner tie rod end replacement 900

I had a safety done on my '95 944T today and the mechanic said there was some play in one of the inner tie rod ends. I don't really believe him since the car only has about 160K miles on it but I can't argue it and have to address the so called "problem".

I've heard it can be tricky replacing one of those inner tie rod ends and it may require a special tool depending on what steering rack the car has. I'm pretty sure my car has a CAM rack in it. Does that require a special tool to replace ?

I've seen the directions for doing the replacment in the 700/900 FAQ. It seems doable but I'm wondering if any of you fellow listers have done this repair on a 900 and wanted to get your thoughts/recommendations. Should I just try and replace that one inner tie rod end or in the end would I be better off just putting in a rebuilt steering rack ?

Thanks,

Roger
