Brake light bulb out dilemma 200

So I've been chasing the usual quirky tailight bulb woes in my 83 245. The latest one is quite puzzling though. First it's only the left brake light that's acting up. Sometimes it works and sometimes not. The bulb out light comes on to let me know when. At first I could smack the brakelight lens and it would straighten out for awhile. It's always been my experience that when this happens then there's something going wrong in the bulb or socket. I've replaced the bulb and the socket and now it does something completely different. What it does now is sometimes when I'm driving and I step on the brake the bulb out light comes on but if I let off of the pedal and then press it again then the light is out. This is a new one for me. Has anyone had this happen to them? I've already checked the wiring connections to the pedal switch and they seem to be fine. I guess the next thing would be to replace either (or both) the pedal switch or the bulb out relay. If y'all think it's the relay could you tell me where it's located in the car and what it looks like? And as always, any and all input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Charles
