Hi Newbie -
Been driving 240s, 245s or 244s, since 1977. Never felt the need for air bags. Volvo provides the 3-point safey belts, the steel pipe inside each door, front and rear body crumple zones, and the engine-drop in front-on collisions.
Plus - suspension that is able to handle swerves quite well, gas tank mounted in front of the rear axle, and probably more safety features that don't come to mind just now.
I bought a Volvo after learning that my sister-in-law walked away from a 40-mph head-on collision in her 144. Both cars totalled, other driver DOA.
We enjoy the insurance discount on our three Volvo that comes with a 6+ year clean driving record on all drivers.
Even though we have been involved in two collisions over those years, both were the other driver's fault and our insurance company was held harmless.
So - you can do for yourself many things that can bring security without having the air bags. Just be horsey about everybody hooking their belt before moving the car - even your friend's kids.
Keep clear of distractions while driving, like kids, cell phones, and correcting navigational errors. (For that problem, you might consider a GPS system of some kind.)
And stay way clear of cars driven in an erratic manner, like a hopped-up high school kid weaving in traffic, or such. Stay clear of flying debris. BTDT
Last idea - stay out of the freeway fast lane after midnight. Drunks who get on going the wrong way are in that lane thinking it is their slow lane. Those collisions are always head-on, high-speed, and fatal - air bags or not.
Regards,
Bob
