peeling clearcoat--how to stop? 200 1991

My 244 has an original, metallic clearcoat finish that's pretty good for its age: shiny with spiderwebbing from a few careless washings by family members, dings from doors and shopping carts, and a few dull spots where bird droppings were left too long.

While washing my car today I noticed clearcoat flaking off that little painted strip just below the left headlight. No! How do I keep the peeling from spreading?

I usually park my car outdoors and just started using a car cover.
