122 wagon tranny concerns 120-130

We've got a 122S wagon (220?) with (unfortunately) an automatic transmission, which I really know nothing about, which leads me to two questions.

1) It seems to have a reasonably significant leak, and the only source that I can see in a cursory external (non-running) observation might be the bushing where the shifter shaft enters the transmission. Anyone know if that seems likely? If it helps in a possible diagnosis, the only short highway trip I took resulted in a loss of about 1L...

2) Seeing as we'd always prefer a manual transmission, would a swap be easy or likely? Any suggestions on where to look or what to source?

(all right... three questions)

3) We're in Toronto. Any local experts known?

Thanks for any help
