240 Wagon: Tempurature Gauge 200

I bought an 87 240 Wagaon with 220K miles.

After 30 minutes of driving, the tempurature gauge is in the 7:30 position (the tempurature outside is 55). On a few occassions the gauge is at 9:00, but it does not stay there long.

I switched to the highest octain fuel and did not notice any change.

Note that the hose that comes of the manifold and goes to the air filter has a large crack in it.
