am radio station interference/poor reception 700

I'm posting a new thread from the antenna one because the installation is resolved, but now that the new/used one is in, reception isn't good and interference is constant on am. This was not the case before the old antenna was broken off, and I have no idea what to do as I've checked and rechecked everything I did.
The antenna cable is reconnected, the sleeve just inside the antenna assembly at the top is clean and making good contact, all the connections are back the same as how they came apart, and I changed the relay in the engine compartment also just to see, and that had no effect.
I have a '90, the used antenna I put in was out of an 88. I can't see why that would make any difference, but it's the only difference there is.
Reception is now about as good as it was with the antenna broken off. Any wild and crazy ideas?
