OIL FILTER QUALITY & MESSY OIL CHANGES!

OIL FILTERS & THEIR REMOVAL- Just getting my hands "swedish dirty" for the first time, and at 60 years old ,I'm feeling like a young kid with his first car!I was going to change oil today, and read it can be a mess(740 turbo 1989)Independendly I figure a drill bit and portable drill, could help drain oil w/o the stress of a nail banged into filter(possibly negligible regardless)I am surprised to see towels ,aluminum foil and other methods listed as good choices for getting the job done( still with some mess);having not completed the task perhaps I'm missing some thing.(really)-is there good sense for not using a drill bit method when changing the filter? > ON FILTERS - Some years ago,I remember reading the results of a retired mechanical engineer who spent 2 years researching auto oil filters. His testing showed high marks for Puralator(puralator is the original oil filter going back to the 1920's) and low marks for Fram, very low in fact![To be fair I see that Fram has a new premium line]-Anyone tore open any of these filters Mann Volvo etc? >I know a german enthusiast who now believes 'Bosch is no longer the 'wondabar' it used to be. Volvo of course says use volvo filters Anyone 'swear' by another flter?Any research references?
