a couple new problems - coughing and shifting 140-160

Hi everyone,
I am back at the well of Volvo knowledge to ask a couple of questions.

A). Lately my 142 has been "coughing", (backfiring through the intake as though it is running too lean), I adjusted the vales, timing and carbs and put in some fuel system cleaner and that seemed to cure it for a few days. I know that the car isn't running too lean. Am I just getting bad gas?

B). A few weeks ago, (about 1,000 miles) it became very hard to shift into 1st gear. I went under and adjusted the clutch and it has been fine untill this week where I have the same problem again. It is now very hard to shift into 1st and reverse. the clutch and cable are both relatively new about 15,000 miles and the reans oil has recently been changed, (30 wt. it is an M41).
Any ideas?

This has become my daily driver, I put about 500 - 800 miles a week on it. I have been using as my daily driver since February, since my '95 Mitsubishi died at 328,000 miles ...still with the original clutch I might add.

Thank you in advance.
CU
